India Invites Pak’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto For SCO Meeting In May

India has invited Pakistan’s foreign minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in May, according to a media report on Wednesday, pinning the hope to mitigate its stressed relationship with the neighbour.

The invitation came as a positive response to Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif’s urge to have peace with India over all outstanding issues including the Kashmir dispute.

Meanwhile, the invitation to nuclear-armed rivals was unexpected, as Bhutto’s initial comment against India’s prime minister Narendra Modi triggered protests all over the country.

While both countries have not officially confirmed the SCO meeting invitation. The meeting will be hosted in Goa and reports suggest an invitation has gone to China as well.

Earlier, the Islamic country turned down the invitation to National Security Advisors on Afghanistan in Delhi last year, tagging India a ‘Spoiler Peacemaker’, according to reports.

If Pakistan accepts, Zardari’s visit to India will be remarkable, the first foreign minister to visit India in more than a decade.

This meeting is likely to solve the India-Pakistan strained situation since the 2016 Pathankot Air Force attacks.
