The cumulative vaccine coverage crossed 160.43 Crore in the country with the administration of over 70 lakh doses in the last 24 hours. Over 68 lakh precaution doses have now been administered under the programme started for vulnerable groups on January 10. Meanwhile, over 3.9 Crore children in the age group of 15-18 years or more than 50 per cent have received their first dose of Covaxin.
With several states reporting a rise in daily COVID cases, the active cases mounted to 20,18,825 which is the highest in over 234 days. 2,51,777 recoveries in the last 24 hours takes the recovery rate to 93.50 per cent, which has witnessed a consistent drop since the onset of the third wave. The daily positivity rate stood at 17.94 percent while the weekly positivity rate has risen to 16.56 percent.
Kerala on Thursday reported the highest single day spike of 46,383 new cases, urging the state government to restrict movement to only essential services on the coming Sundays. District-wise restrictions will further be imposed to curb the spread of virus. Central government has flagged Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as states of concern as the given places witness multiple-fold increase in the number of COVID cases being reported.
The Union Health Ministry noted that the number of hospitalizations and severe infections remain low in comparison to the second wave despite record number of COVID cases. Experts highlighted that vaccination has played an immense role in preventing severe infection, thus raising the need for everyone to get vaccinated. The rising number of cases was however flagged, with experts asking people to be cautious and maintain COVID-Appropriate Behavior.
