India recorded 18,475 fresh cases on Saturday, the lowest daily count since June 30, when 18,333 infections were registered, as per TOI’s database collated from state government figures. Its total caseload stood at 1,01,88,263. New cases had fallen below the 20,000 mark earlier this week as well, when 18,588 cases were reported on Monday.
The daily death toll remained below 300 for the second day running, with 280 fatalities being reported on Saturday. A day earlier, India had recorded 253 deaths. With this, the cumulative has risen to 1,47,607. While fresh cases have been falling steadily since mid-September, Saturday’s dip was sharper than usual as nearly 22,500 cases had been reported on Friday and nearly 23,500 on Thursday.
The main reason for the drop was lower testing on Christmas Day (Friday). A little over 8.5 lakh tests were conducted on the day, the lowest in the past 20 days, as per data accessed from the covid19india.org website. The Covid graph in Maharashtra dipped further, with less than 3,000 cases registered on Saturday.
